David Brandon Smith (BA, Montreat College; MDiv, Princeton Seminary; MA, Bonn University) is a Research Associate on the Church History team in the Department of Protestant Theology at Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. He is also a minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and is in the final phase of completing his doctorate (Dr. theol.) in Church History at the University of Bonn. Before coming to Frankfurt, he was a Research Associate at the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS). David is part of the new VW-Foundation project, “Decolonizing postcolonialism,” which focuses on the role of the churches in the struggle for independence in Namibia between 1957 and 1990. Much of his research and publications focus on the historical development and ongoing diversity of Christian perspectives on gender and sexuality. His doctoral dissertation explores the regulation of sexuality and the construction of masculinities in early medieval penitential literature and canon law.
