The GRADE Center Gender is an organisation within GRADE, the central academic institution of Goethe University for the interdisciplinary qualification of young academics in the early career phase. The content of the Gender Centre is planned and implemented by the Cornelia Goethe Centrum.

Narratives of Solidarity and Abandonment: Afghan Women and Transnational Resistance

This workshop explores how Afghan women activists use social media platforms, particularly X, to construct narratives of resistance in response to the Taliban’s gender apartheid regime following August 2021. The workshop aims to examine the role of digital spaces in fostering transnational solidarity, political visibility, and resistance, while also critically engaging with narratives of abandonment and geopolitical indifference. The workshop will allow for reflections on how Afghan women position themselves as political actors within global feminist and transnational networks.

„Doing gender studies in challenging times” – GRADE Center Gender meeting for knowledge-sharing

In this meeting for knowledge-sharing within GRADE Center Gender, we will address the challenge of doing gender studies in current times. Dr. Katharina Hoppe, director of GRADE Center Gender, and Dr. Johanna Leinius, scientific manager of the Cornelia Goethe Center for Gender Studies, will present existing guidelines and share best-practice-examples for preventing and countering attacks on gender studies and those doing gender studies before we open a space for mutual and solidarity-based exchange and dialogue.

Harms of Care: Studying the Elusiveness of Systemic Violence

This workshop aims at a critical perspective of the dominant understanding of care not just within the medical institutions, but also other institutions of care and how this understanding affects interpersonal relationships that shapes the reality of people with disability and chronic illness.
Participants will dive into deeper complexities of different care givers and care infrastructures inquiring how the lack of justice isn't a matter of an event or a situation but gets translated into an inevitable systemic limitation ending up becoming the norm.
