Childhood and Racism: Theoretical and Empirical Perspectives

To explore the relationship between childhood and racism, the presentation first introduces the perspective of educational and social science research on childhood. Based on a discoursetheoretical understanding of racism, it then explains how children are involved in racism. For this purpose, key assumptions of subjectivation-theoretical perspectives are outlined. Finally, empirical insights are provided on the basis of ethnographic data.

An Empirical Perspective on Antisemitic Practices of Differentiation Among Children

Notwithstanding the scientific consensus regarding the early development of social categorization in children, the notion of the "innocent child," often associated with the notion of children's perceived inability to engage in practices of difference, persists as a prevailing truism. This notion is at least contested by childhood studies inspired by social constructivism, as agency is attributed to children: Children are conceptualized as actors. This prompts the following question: to what extent can practices of differentiation among children be interpreted? The manifestation of practices of differentiation among children is a subject that merits further investigation. The present research project investigates anti-Semitic differentiation practices among children, a topic that will be discussed in the forthcoming lecture.
